THE ADJECTIVE

 


Read the following sentences :

1. Riya is an intelligent girl.
2. That book is mine .
3.  Few people can never understand moral values .
4.  I have five mangoes .
  
In the above sentences , words like intelligent , that , few and five are describing one or the other quality of a noun in the sentence . 
like in sentence 1 - ' intelligent ' is describing ,what kind of girl Riya is .
In sentence  2- 'that ' points out which book is meant .
In sentence  3 and 4 - words ' few' and ' five 'points out how many people or how many mangoes .

Definition :'' A word which describes noun in different manner - like its quality ,quantity ,or               number is called an Adjective ''.
Adjectives are also called describing words . Its basic function is to modify nouns or describes a noun's referent .

  KINDS OF ADJECTIVES

1. Adjective of quality : Words which show the kind or quality of a noun are called adjectivesr of          quality.
 for eg : brave , clever , wise , honest , bad , thin etc.

2. Quantitative Adjective :Words which show how much of a thing is meant to be , are called            adjective of quantity .
 for eg : some , much , little ,enough , any , half , whole etc

3. Numeral Adjective :   words which show how many person or things are meant , or in what order a person or a thing stands . 
for eg : it includes cardinals as well as ordinal numbers , like - one ,two, first , second , several , any , all , few , many ,two,four,twenty etc.

4. Distributive Adjective : It refers to each of the number as- each , every , either , neither etc.

5. Demonstrative Adjective : These words  point out particular person or thing we are talking about.
  for eg : this , that , these . those etc.

6. Interrogative Adjective : They are used with nouns to ask questions  .
for eg - what , which , whose etc.

7. Possessive Adjective : They show possession , they describe to whom the thing belongs .
 for eg : my , his her , your , our etc.
