What are Articles ?
A, An and The are called Articles . They are used before noun.
How many types of Article are there ?
There are two types of Articles :
Indefinite and definite .

What is the role of an Article in a sentence ?
An Article is a word used to modify noun, which is a person , place ,object or an idea .It is used to indicate whether a noun in a sentence is specific or general .
Usage of Indefinite Articles :
''An '' : An is used before vowel or vowel sound like : an apple , an umbrella , an ice cream ....all words are starting with vowel.
like : an honest man , an hour , an heir ...all words begin with the vowel sound , as initial consonant 'h' is not pronounced .
''A'' : * ''A'' is used before consonants
* A is used before singular countable nouns . like - a book , a boy , a pen etc.
* A is used before consonant sound ''yu'' like : a university , a European , a useful article etc.
* A is also used with consonant sound ''w'' like : a one rupee note , a one eyed man etc.
* 'A' is used with'' any ''...any means ,anything in general not specific . for eg - a doctor ...could be any doctor.
Usage of Definite article :
''The '' : * When we speak about particular person or a thing .... when we talk about something in specific. like : The book you ordered yesterday is out of stock.
Did you see the pen ?
* With superlative degrees
like : the largest , the smallest etc.
* Before the names of things unique of their kind
like : the sky , the ocean . the sea etc.
* with ordinal numbers
like : He was the first man to land on the moon.
The sixth lesson of this book is very important.
* Before music instruments
like : He can play the flute .
* Before certain books :
like ; The Ramayana , The Mahabharata etc.
* Before some proper names :
like : Oceans and Sea : The Pacific Ocean
rivers : The Ganga , The Nile
mountains : The Alps , The Himalayas
deserts: The Sahara Desert
island : The Philippines
canals : The Suez Canal
* before names of certain countries which include words like republic and kingdom,
emirates, country with plural name
like : The United States Of America
The Netherlands
The United Arab Emirates
* When a singular noun is meant to represent a whole class
for eg : The cat loves milk
The dog is a faithful animal .
OMISSION OF THE ARTICLES
Article ''The'' is omitted in following case :
* Before the names of substances or abstract nouns used in general sense .
for eg : Honesty is the best policy .
Gold is a precious metal etc.
* Before plural countable nouns used in general sense :
like : Children like chocolates
Computers are very useful these days .
* Before the names of meals :
like : Lunch is ready .
What time do you have lunch ?
* Before names of relation like : father , mother , aunt even with nurse ,cook
like : Father has returned
Aunts wants you to see her .
* Omitted before school , colleges , university , hospital ,when they are used for their primary purpose like:
I learnt German at school.
We go to church on Sundays.
but when the same is used in definite sense ,then 'The' is applicable .
for eg : The school is near my home.
I met him at the church.
