                                                 THE NOUN : GENDER 

The words indicating sex of noun are called gender. 
eg : mother ,father ,cow, pencil chicken etc .

Nouns have four genders : 

1. Masculine : The words which indicate male sex of the noun are called masculine genders .
                        for eg: horse , man , king , actor etc .

 2. Feminine :  The words which indicate female sex of the noun  are called feminine genders .
                        for eg : queen , hen , girl , duchess etc

3.  Common : The words which denotes either male or female sex of the noun are called common 
                       genders .
                        for eg : baby , infant . thief . parent ,pupil etc 
 4. Neuter :  The words which indicates neither male nor female sex of the noun are called neuter 
                     genders .Basically things without life .
                     for eg : table , bed , school , box , toy etc .

                   

                         RULES FOR CONVERSION OF MASCULINE INTO FEMININE 


1. Some of the masculines are converted into feminine by adding '' ess to the masculine :

     for eg : masculine                            feminine 

                  actor                                 actress
                  prince                               princess
                  tiger                                 tigress
                  host                                  hostess
                  waiter                               waitress
                  emperor                            empress etc .

# ''ess'' is added after dropping the vowel of the masculine ending .

 2.  In some cases the feminine is formed by using an entirely different word :

     for eg :  masculine                       feminine 
                 
                  buck                                doe
                  bull                                 cow
                  horse                              mare
                  monk                              nun
                  drake                              duck
                  gander                            goose etc .

 3.  In some of the cases masculine is converted into feminine by changing the suffix:

       for eg :  masculine                       feminine

                    grandfather                      grandmother
                    landlord                          landlady
                    salesman                         saleswoman 
                    manservant                     maidservant etc .

FIGURE OF SPEECH     A figure of speech is a word or phrase using figurative language - a language that has other than its normal definition .It is an expression or word that is used with a metaphorical rather than a literal meaning . Whenever a speaker does not intend the literal interpretation of his words ,then he is using a figure of speech .
