                                    Compound words                                         

To understand compound words ,first we should understand the meaning of the word ''compound'',ie - intense ,deepen,stronger,or to combine

when we combine two different words ,say as noun with other noun ,noun with verb ,noun with an adjective or an adverb to make word  more stronger ,deeper or we can say a new meaningful word.That combination of two different words to make a new invention is called compound words. So,in simple manner we can say , a combination of two different words give a birth to one new word is called compound words 
 eg -grand mother
        butterfly 
        green house
        rain coat

TYPES OF COMPOUND WORDS:

1.] OPEN COMPOUND WORDS
2.]CLOSED COMPOUND WORDS
3']HYPHENATED COMPOUND WORDS


 1. OPEN COMPOUND WORDS  :These are two different words which are used together with a little space between them , and together they form a new,different word .
for eg - living room
             lawn tennis
             post office
             ice cream
             table cloth etc

2. CLOSED COMPOUND WORDS : When two different words are written together as a single unit are called closed compound words 

for eg : football
             housefly
             flashlight 
             toothpick
             cardboard etc

3.HYPHENATED COMPOUND WORDS :When we write two or three words together as a single unit or phrase with hyphen are called hyphenated compound words.
 for eg :   merry -gate
                second -rate 
                well -being
                vice-versa etc

FIGURE OF SPEECH     A figure of speech is a word or phrase using figurative language - a language that has other than its normal definition .It is an expression or word that is used with a metaphorical rather than a literal meaning . Whenever a speaker does not intend the literal interpretation of his words ,then he is using a figure of speech . It can be repetition , arrangement or omission of words with literal meaning ,or a phrase with a specialised meaning not based on the literal meaning of the words .It is used to convey meaning or heighten effect often by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning or connotation familiar to the reader or listener .
